Finding a calm

6

A few weeks ago, on one rainy and dreary day, I departed the city to do some roaming. I was longing to find a comfort that only the open road can bring me, and maybe, just maybe, I’d find some quiet there too. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a quiet from the city itself, but rather from my own mind and the busyness that was bumpin’ around in there. I needed to calm the rushing back-and-forth tide in my head that was keeping me awake at night. I really had no destination in mind and just considered the journey the purpose of the day.

Plunging head first into rainbuckets at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains hoping to find even the slightest break in the clouds, but not, I soon gave up and settled on a cheeseburger and fries at a creekside grill to wait it out. After about an hour or so with no sign of let up I decided on leaving the mountain front. I pointed myself east, charged up over a hill and headed out onto the flats leaving behind the grill and its cold empty patio.

Over the next few hours I wandered about on trails looking for angles and light. It was eerily quiet at most of my stops and I soon realized that I was quite by myself, out of the way and some distance from the road. I heard no traffic or human voice. And it was very relaxing.

I think we need to sometimes get away and try new things. When you are on a familiar road (literally and in life), instead of making that regular turn to the right, maybe go left. See what you find. It’s refreshing. For this series of images I pulled out my Hasselblad Flexbody, a camera I got a long time ago but have yet found the time to use, save for this trip. It was so exhilarating. I shot nothing but film this day and even though my digital camera called to me a few times, I ignored it and went with what I knew I needed.

Just my thoughts.

  5. Wow Ronnie!! As usual you took some awesome photos. I like what you did with this series of shots. The buildings almost look like minitures you might find in a model.
