I am by no means a child or baby photographer and I have no problem saying that. But when friends like Robin and Levi have me over to hang out and take pictures of their family, there’s no way I’m passing it up!
If you’ve followed my blog for a while you will easily recognize this lovely family. I first shot Robin and Levi’s engagement pictures way back when and have continued shooting them as their life together has progressed. And now I’m photographing their little Talon.
As I was saying, I’m no baby photographer. Yet I’ve realized photographing babies is quite fun, especially if you can find your way about it. When I arrived at their home, I had first planned on photographing everything posed. I’d wait for the smiles. I’d wait for just the right moments of Talon looking at me, etc. and that would be it. But after a few minutes, I realized, first of all, that’s not how babies work (not at all!). And secondly, I do not see things this way and it actually freezes me up. So I decided, why stray from what I know and be frazzled???
I know some photographers (and good friends) who shoot this way and it’s their style. But we all know how hard it is to get a little one to look at you and smile all at once when there is a big ‘ol world in front of them that’s just too darn distracting! And besides, have you seen me lately, I’m in no condition to be jumping all around, flailing about and stuff trying to pry smiles,,, I would, without a doubt, break something!
What I did start noticing right away was all the little fleeting moments. Mom waking him up, mom getting him dressed, being smothered in affection by dad, and especially the little yawns. To me, that’s what’s important,,,those little bits of emotions and connections that aren’t usually caught to cherish. That’s where my camera found absolute happiness.
As I sat editing these, I was a little more than moved. Maybe my eyes even got a little moist. But to be part of something special over time really pulls at your heart. Thank you two so much for inviting me along.

those smiles are great!! way to catch them Ronnie!!!

I woke up to check on talon tonight and as I was stumbling back to bed I remembered that Robin said that you were posting our pics tonight. They turned out great thank you so much. What you captured on your camera was perfect and what you said about us may have made my eyes a little moist. Thank you for that, I don’t get that way much. Anyways Robin of course had to be woken up in the middle of the night to look at pics of the most wonderful little boy in the world. I will stop rambling and go back to bed now. Thank you Ronnie you out did yourself yet again. Also great shots of Sam and Lucas.

You nailed it! I love how you shared your thought process going into the shoot and how you adjusted once there in the moment. I could easily put myself in your shoes… I’ve been there before.
Love the dog shots too.
